I have been reading a lot of articles lately regarding the writing of effective SEO copy and I must say that I am not all that impressed. Too many articles focus on tactics that are borderline keyword stuffing for their SEO copy and to me that is not an effective method. One of the prime rules of optimization is to optimize for the user and not the search engines and I stand by that rule whole heartedly when writing copy. No one wants to read copy that has nothing but a set of three keywords constantly repeated in every sentence. Continue Reading »

I remember the good old days when you used to be able to optimize a website for the Plural version of a keyword and the search engines (the main ones anyway) would still potentially rank you for the singular keyword version as well since it was inherent within the plural. As an example the word “phone†existing within the word “phonesâ€. Well the glory days of simplified keyword optimization now seem to be gone and the rules of the game have changed.   I first noticed this change a few months ago. In a sense this is a follow up on my previous post What Minty Fresh Indexing Means for Google Search Results and Bloggers. I was monitoring the success and indexing of that post and ironically enough it was not indexed for several days. This struck me as extremely odd since the last few posts I had written were almost all indexed within 24 hours and I thought that this one would be as well. The entire circumstance left me starring at my laptop screen in absolute confusion wondering what I had done differently on all of my other posts that I did not do on this one. Recently I read a post by Matt Cutts about Google’s improved Minty Fresh Indexing and found it to be very interesting and impressive all at once. At first my thought was “Wow! I can’t believe that I could just write to my heart’s content and most likely be indexed and visible within 24 hours for my Niche terms.â€Â In a sense I was correct and still impressed but unfortunately I didn’t consider the downside of minty fresh indexing and yes unfortunately there is a downside. Several weeks ago I order Verizon Fios so that I could consolidate my TV and Internet and not pay out the nose with my previous provider. The ordering process was ultimately REALLY simple and the install happened the next day with one of the best techs that I have ever had come into my home to install something which made me even more excited. The speed is great (2Mbps up 10Mbps down) and the Verizon Fios router comes ready with a built in hub and wireless capabilities which was perfect since I no longer believe in desktops J Everything about Verizon Fios was fantastic…great install time, great service, great speed, great convenience…what’s not to love?   Well…that is the reason I am writing this review on Verizon Fios, because there is in fact something not to love. Continue Reading »

I am sure that there are books, blogs, and other resources both on paper and online that would instruct an online marketer on how to make their SEM keyword list as extensive as possible but I feel the need to write this post as I continuously see lost opportunities for paid search campaigns. Whether I was working as a consultant, for an agency, or in house on the client side I find that SEM campaigns are typically only hitting 60% of their potential due to incomplete keyword lists and as far as I can tell the reason is due to incomplete keyword research. Waiting for the next Google update can be stressful and nerve racking to say the least. After spending months getting relevant one way back links and doing onsite SEO you are now patiently waiting for Google to recognize all of your effort and hard work. Also during this time you are hoping that you didn’t “over optimize” your site or get “too many” one way back links in too short a period of time. At least I imagine that is what some experts are doing out there since they have probably read a bunch of articles on the bad things that can happen when you “over optimize” a website. I on the other hand don’t get too concerned over any of the above and this is why:

This is actually an FAQ that I wrote some time ago but most of it is still relevant to the beginner or the new SEO client so I thought I would post it and update over time.  I hope it helps! Continue Reading »

Once in a while I feel the need to give a shout out to those who have impacted the way I view SEO or life in general. I find that there are many friends and co-workers that have influenced the way I (and others) do business and live for the better and who do not always get the recognition that is deserved so I intend to make it a point to give credit where credit is due and hopefully the practice will rub off on other professionals. For some reason Microsoft thought it would be a hysterical practical joke to create ASP .NET and make it include (On certain dynamic sites) these ridiculously large portions of gobble-de-gook called VIEWSTATE in the HEAD section within the HTML of web pages. I am convinced…they did it just to mess with anyone trying to perform SEO on a website and probably laugh every single time they encounter a site that has it. Some say (Usually the developer that doesn’t feel like finding a work around) that it does not effect SEO. As I strongly disagree with that I will prove that VIEWSTATE does in fact impact SEO and also provide some ways to work around the VIEWSTATE issue for other SEO experts out there trying to jump the hurdle of having 100 kilobytes of junk in the HEAD section on their pages. Continue Reading »
