Google News is now Case Sensitive
I stumbled upon the oddest discovery earlier today when monitoring the success of a press release that I had just published. Apparently not only is Google distinguishing between singular and plural keyword searches but it is also (at least in the Google News search) distinguishing between upper and lower case. When practicing SEO and when giving advice I have never thought to even contemplate whether case should be considered outside of not making a page title using all upper case or case that is not consistent.Â
This is one of those moments that I HAVE to go on a rant. I am normally a very large supporter of Google but after giving me different search results when I capitalize the first letter in a word or when I leave it lower case is just one of the most absurd things that I have ever seen. What Google is telling me is that my article titles should now look like “Find SEO, and Seo, and SeO information here – Oh Yeah…and information on SEOs, Seos, and SeOsâ€. I am seriously hoping that this is just one of those flukes that occur within the algorithm at times because if I now have to optimize for the plural, singular, and case sensitive search I am going to go a little nuts and I am afraid that many searchers will too.
On the flip side of my frustration is the opportunity with case sensitive search.  While most articles have their keywords capitalized it now leaves a lot of opportunity to optimize for the lower case version of a term and in essence be a niche result.
Just in case you have any doubts give this a test. Do one search on Google for case sensitive search and another for Case Sensitive Search and you will notice the results are substantially different. Good luck with your newfound wisdom J
